The IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (UFFC) Society annually recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. Below, we highlight the 2024 awardees, honoring their groundbreaking work and dedication.

IEEE UFFC Achievement Award

Description: To recognize outstanding contributions to or technical achievements in the field of ultrasonics, ferroelectrics, and frequency control.
2024 Recipient: Zuo-Guang Ye
Citation: For significant contributions to dielectric, piezo-/ferroelectric, and relaxor materials for high-performance transducers, and for outstanding leadership and service to the IEEE UFFC Society through standards development and committee work.


IEEE UFFC Distinguished Service Award

Description: To recognize meritorious service to the UFFC Society over a sustained period of time.
2024 Recipient: Peter Lewin
Citation: For his exemplary service to promote the UFFC Society and his visionary contributions to enhance the reputation and quality of the Society’s Journal.


IEEE Carl Hellmuth Hertz Ultrasonics Award

Description: To recognize primary investigators that have contributed to the field of ultrasonics.
Recipient: Zhen Xu
Citation: For invention and clinical translation of histotripsy - the noninvasive mechanical ultrasound ablation technology.


IEEE UFFC Rayleigh Award

Description: The IEEE UFFC Rayleigh Ultrasonics Award represents the highest honor for achievement within the  IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (UFFC) Society in the field of Ultrasonics. The achievement may be in technical innovations, research, education, publications, and related professional endeavors. The candidate should have demonstrated sustained accomplishments in the field of Ultrasonics for more than 25 calendar years prior to the year of nomination.
Recipient: Stanislav Emelianov
Citation: For seminal contributions to elasticity imaging, ultrasound-guided photoacoustic imaging, and theranostic contrast agents.


IEEE Ultrasonics Early Career Investigator Award

Description: To recognize the achievements of a young researcher in the area of ultrasonics and its applications. The award is specific to those researchers in the early stages of their career. 
Recipient: Ruochen Lu
Citation: For pioneering frequency scaling high-performance thin-film lithium niobate acoustic devices to millimeter wave frequencies.


IEEE Ferroelectrics Recognition Award

Description: To recognize meritorious achievement in the field of Ferroelectricity or related sciences.
Recipient: Jing-Feng Li
Citation: For his extensive contributions and academic achievements in the field of electronic functional materials research over the past 20 years.


IEEE Ferroelectrics Young Investigator Award

Description: To recognize the important contributions of young scientists/engineers in reference to their contributions to fundamental research, integration, application, or education.
Recipient: Patrick Lomenzo
Citation: In recognition of his significant contribution to research and education in the field of ferroelectric materials based on hafnium oxide.


IEEE Robert E. Newnham Ferroelectrics Award

Description: To recognize investigators in the field of dielectric, piezoelectric and ferroic materials that have contributed significantly to the understanding of structure-property relations.
Recipient: Venkatraman Gopalan
Citation: For fundamental contributions to the symmetries, materials, and optical metrology of ferroelectrics and translating this knowledge to technological applications.


I.I. Rabi Award

Description: To recognize technical contributions in the fields of atomic and molecular frequency standards, time transfer, and frequency and time metrology.
Recipient: Elizabeth Donley
Citation: For exceptional technical contributions, leadership, and service in the development of atomic instrumentation and the realization of the SI second.


C.B. Sawyer Memorial Award

Description: To recognize entrepreneurship or leadership in the frequency control community; or outstanding contributions in the development, production, or characterization of resonator materials or structure.
Recipient: Dana Weinstein
Citation: For pioneering breakthroughs in MEMS resonators fabricated in commercial CMOS chips, and service to the frequency control community.


Walter G. Cady Award

Description: To recognize technical contributions in the area of piezoelectric frequency control devices.
Recipient: Archita Hati
Citation: For groundbreaking contributions to the field of phase noise metrology and advances in the development of ultra-low noise frequency sources and synthesis.
