IEEE is the largest technical society in the world. It consists of more than 40 Societies and Councils with a membership of over 400,000. The UFFC Society, with more than 2,000 members, is one of the IEEE Societies.

According to the UFFC-S Constitution, the fields of interest of the UFFC-S shall include theory, technology, materials, and applications relating to:

  • The generation, transmission, and detection of ultrasonic waves and related phenomena.
  • Medical ultrasound and associated technologies.
  • Ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and piezomagnetic materials.
  • Frequency generation and control, timing, and time coordination and distribution.

The UFFC-S is a technical leader in the three areas: ultrasonics, ferroelectrics, and frequency control, as shown in its name. The UFFC-S sponsors and organizes three annual symposia whose locations are rotated around the world. Three proceedings, one from each technical area, are published and are accessible from IEEE Xplore. The three symposia are well attended by both members and non-members:

  1. IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)
  2. IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics (ISAF)
  3. IEEE International Frequency Control Symposium (IFCS)

The UFFC-S publishes an archival journal: IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control (TUFFC). This is a premier journal in its respective areas and may be accessed via IEEE Xplore.

The UFFC-S also publishes an electronic Newsletter to communicate with its members. The Newsletter is scheduled to be published at least two issues per year.

In addition, the UFFC-S develops standards, supports its chapters around the world, and sponsors an educational program. The UFFC-S is governed by the Administrative Committee (AdCom) that is operated according to its Constitution and Bylaws. Normally, the AdCom holds two meetings per year. The UFFC-S also gives a number of awards annually to recognize contributions to its technical areas or services from distinguished individuals. The UFFC-S provides a travel budget for the award recipients of its Distinguished lecturer award to deliver technical presentations around the world.

The UFFC-S is a volunteer-based society. It constantly looks for volunteers to help its governance, symposia, and publications. Please contact me, the symposia leaders, or publication editors if you are interested in helping.
