Professor Stuart Foster inducted into the National Academy of Engineering
It is a privilege to share the wonderful news with IEEE UFFC Society members that our colleague Professor Stuart Foster was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions bestowed on an engineer who has made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/ implementing innovative approaches to engineering education." He will be formally inducted into the National Academy of Engineering, at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on October 8, 2017.
The citation for this prestigious recognition states:
“Foster, F. Stuart, Professor and Canada Research Chair in ultrasound imaging, department of medical biophysics, University of Toronto, Toronto - For pioneering the field of high-frequency ultrasound and translating its technologies into clinical and preclinical imaging systems.”
Professor Foster’s group at the University of Toronto’s Sunnybrook Research Institute has made fundamental contributions to the technology used in high frequency ultrasound imaging. His research has focused on the development of innovative new transducer technologies, integrated system platforms, and preclinical and clinical implementations that have solved problems for biomedical researchers and clinical practitioners. The technology developed in his laboratory has been fully commercialized and is now considered the gold standard in high frequency ultrasound with users in over 1,500 laboratories, drug companies and other med-tech organizations around the world. The recent FDA approval of the clinical version of the latest technology will open up many new applications in neurosurgery, neonatal imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, dermatology, and ophthalmology.
