2017 Joint IEEE ISAF-IWATMD-PFM Conference

The 2017 Joint IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics (ISAF), International Workshop on Acoustic Transduction Materials and Devices (IWATMD), and Piezoresponse Force Microscopy Workshop (PFM) will take place from May 7th thru 11th in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America. Hosted on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology and chaired by Prof. Nazanin Bassiri-Gharb, this conference promises not only a world-class scientific program but also plenty of opportunity to network and exchange ideas in a multidisciplinary setting. In addition to the technical program, we draw your attention to a few events described below specific to this year’s meeting. Memorial Sessions

The end of the year 2016 was marked by two sad events -  the passing of two of the ferroelectrics community’s greatest contributors, Prof. Jan Fousek and Prof. Leslie Eric Cross. Both have contributed immensely to the development of the field, and memorial sessions in their honor will be organized during the 2017 Joint IEEE ISAF-IWATMD-PFM.

Adaptive Leadership workshop

The event sponsored by the IEEE Women in Engineering initiative at the 2017 Joint IEEE ISAF-IWATMD-PFM will break with habit, both changing shape and focusing towards a new direction - taking the form of a participative workshop on the topic of adaptive leadership.

"The most common cause of failure in leadership is produced by treating adaptive challenges as if they were technical problems. What’s the difference? While technical problems may be very complex and critically important (like replacing a faulty heart valve during cardiac surgery), they have known solutions that can be implemented by current know-how. They can be resolved through the application of authoritative expertise and through the organization’s current structures, procedures and ways of doing things. Adaptive challenges can only be addressed through changes in people’s priorities, beliefs, habits, and loyalties. Making progress requires going beyond any authoritative expertise to mobilize discovery, shedding certain entrenched ways, tolerating losses, and generating the new capacity to thrive anew." At the 2017 Joint IEEE ISAF-IWATMD-PFM Adaptive Leadership workshop, an introduction to the concepts and tools of adaptive leadership in the context of academia will be presented by the Sheller School of Business faculty. The workshop is scheduled to take place during lunch break on Wednesday the 10th of May, from 12:30 to 14:00 – with lunch provided. Participants will be contacted and given a task in advance of the conference, the results of which will be discussed in breakout groups after the general introduction to adaptive leadership. Places are limited, so register now!
