2022 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium: 10 -13 October
Welcome to Venice
After two years of remote conferences, we are delighted to welcome delegates to the IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, which will follow a hybrid format this year. The Symposium will take place 10-13th October 2022 in Venice on Lido, a beautiful barrier island in the Venice lagoon. Lido island is most famous for its beaches where you can enjoy nice walks although the water will be rather cold and the beach services will be closed in October. Lido Island is also very well known for the Venice Film Festival which takes place at the very same venue where the IEEE IUS is being held.
Delegates traveling to attend in-person will also certainly want to visit Venice’s historical center on the main island which is 3 km away from the Lido Island (20 -30 minute waterbus ride from the Lido waterbus station). There, cars are replaced by boats and the architecture boasts the famous St. Mark's Basilica, the Rialto Bridge, the Bridge of Sighs (pictured below), and an entirely unique atmosphere. You may want to take advantage of the International Biennale of Arts Exhibition taking place at Arsenal from the 3rd week in April to the last week in November. For a peek at what the Arts Exhibition offers, click here.
The iconic vaporetti (water buses) allows tourists to travel around the grand canal that encircles the main districts of the historical center and throughout the lagoon to the surrounding 118 islands in the Venice lagoon (pictured below). Allow some extra time either before or after the conference to stroll through the very different areas that make up the city of Venice including some of the most famous landmarks in the San Marco district, the famous glass workshops on Murano Island, the lace museum on the Burano Island, and many other charming and lovely spots. Food is another fantastic feature of the city - to mention just a few dishes, do not miss the legendary fish risotto, 'sarde in saor' and the vermicelli cooked in cuttlefish ink. As you wander, you may even lose yourself in the ancient ghetto or bump into a picturesque squero - where gondolas come to life! Just remember, that time may betray you if you roam too ardently and keep in mind that traveling from the San Marco waterbus stop back to the conference center can take about 45 minutes (bus on Lido Island + waterbus to San Marco).
Getting the most from the hybrid program
For delegates choosing to attend virtually their oral presentations will be live-streamed during scheduled talk times with live question-and-answer sessions. Session chairs will attentively include questions from off-site attendees during these live exchanges. Prerecorded versions of both on-site and virtual presentations will also be available asynchronously, starting at least 2 days prior to the conference and for at least 4 weeks after the conference closes.
Posters presented by remote authors will be printed and displayed on-site during their sessions to attract attention to the work. These posters will display a code allowing on-site attendees to easily access the associated prerecorded oral presentation and/or set up an online meeting with the authors. We know the minutes will be counted during these busy poster sessions but hope that both on-site and virtual attendees will take full advantage of the opportunity to schedule meetings together and to interact via the on-line forum. All poster presentations will benefit from a short prerecorded oral presentation that will be available asynchronously starting at least 2 days prior to the conference and for at least 4 weeks after the conference closes.
Each oral presentation and poster will be associated with a dedicated online forum open throughout the conference and up to 4 weeks post-conference so that attendees can continue to ask authors questions.
Short courses will also be hybrid and are planned so that at least one instructor is on-site. Short courses will be recorded during live-streaming at their scheduled time and made available to registered students 24 hours later for 15 days. Live question-and-answer sessions will take place during each course and remote attendees will have online access to submit additional questions to instructors. A technical assistant will be on-site for each short course to alternate views appropriately between screen sharing of slides and a larger room view to display information presented in the classroom and during question-and-answers and to make sure that all in-room speakers will be heard by virtual attendees and vice-versa.

Patrons & Exhibitors
IUS is particularly grateful to our patrons and exhibitors. Their support is invaluable! Attendees can visit them any time during the 3 days of the technical program - either on the first floor of the Palazzo del Casino or via consultation of the virtual exhibit space. We are extremely grateful to acknowledge each and every patron and exhibitor! Special thanks are extended for the especially strong support from FujiFilm VisualSonics and Verasonics as Platinum patrons, Vermon and Cephasonics Ultrasound as gold patrons, and us4us and Meggit as Silver patrons. Verasonics, Bracco and Philips are also sponsoring the Challenge on Ultrasound Localisation and Tracking Algorithms for Super Resolution.
Please see the full list of sponsors here so that you can take advantage of the opportunity to enrich your knowledge of the state-of-the-art products available in your field.
Don't miss featured events of the Technical Program
Short courses: Monday, 10 October
As is customary, the Symposium begins with Short Courses on the Monday ahead of the main technical programme. It is possible to register for one or two courses at registration rates adjusted for in person and virtual attendance, and, for the first time, it is possible to register to attend only a short course with no obligation to sign up to attend the rest of the technical program. This year we have new courses offered by Meaghan O'Reilly and David Melodelima on Therapeutic applications of focused ultrasound, Koen van Dongen and Andreas Mayer on Acoustic wave theory and modeling, and Sunil Bhave on resonant actuators. In addition, we also continue to run our most successful courses of from recent past symposia., The full programme and additional information can be found here [https://2022.ieee-ius.org/short-courses/].
Technical Program: Tuesday, 11 October to Thursday, 13 October
The main technical programme begins on Tuesday, with scheduling aimed to provide ample opportunity for both in-person and remote attendees to make the most of the oral presentations, posters and lively discussions - both technical and social! In addition to the cutting-edge research of the 1,174 contributing authors with abstracts accepted for oral or poster presentation, particular highlights to look out for this year will include the following.
For all delegates, we are delighted to share that our Plenary talk this year (Tuesday 11 October 2pm CET) will be given by Prof. Sir John Pendry of Imperial College London, who in his talk, ‘Waves in time dependent systems’, will discuss his paradigm-breaking research in nano-optics and how wave properties hold the key to making objects invisible. You can read more about Sir John Pendry here and find out about our other invited and invited clinical speakers by visiting the symposium website, here.
The Ultrasound Localisation and Tracking Algorithms for Super Resolution (ULTRA-SR) Challenge Session starts at 11 AM CET on Wednesday, 12 October. A total of 26 participants from 12 countries have accepted the challenge to produce the best Super Resolution images using 4 data sets consisting of a number of contrast enhanced ultrasound image sequences generated through computer simulation and in-vivo acquisition. Eight finalists will present their solutions at the challenge session on Wednesday and the winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on Friday. You can visit the challenge web site to find out more, here.
The Closing Session will feature a celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Paul Langevin, the originator of modern ultrasound, to be presented by Francis Duck, recently retired Professor of the University of Bath and Tom Szabo, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University and author of the well-known book, Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging: Inside Out. This presentation will feature many firsts including piezoelectric transducers, and pulse echo systems for sonar and imaging, to be followed by the challenge awards, conference highlights and a few words in closing.

The emphasis for the social program has been placed on facilitating time together in a relaxed and festive environment. Regrettably, we have not been able to find a way to make these events available for virtual attendees but we will try to share some highlights via photos and videos of the events.
The reception mixer will be held at the venue the evening of Tuesday, 11 October. This should be a great occasion to meet old friends and make new ones and there will be a few surprises scattered about to celebrate the artistic culture of Venice.
The gala dinner on Wednesday, 12 October will be served at the beautiful Excelsior Hotel with musical animation at dinner and, if the weather permits, on the beach.
