Ernest J. Feleppa (M’82–SM’99–LSM’12–LF’15) was born in New York City, NY, USA, in 1940. He received the baccalaureate in physics from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, in 1961, and the Ph.D. degree in biophysics at Columbia University, New York, NY, USA, in 1968.,After a year of post-doctoral research in physiology and genetics, he became a member of the research staff at Riverside Research, New York, NY, in 1969, where he pursued research in coherent optics, environmental systems, and education-management systems before joining the Biomedical-Engineering Laboratory at Riverside Research. He undertook research in ultrasonic tissue characterization applied to the eye, liver, kidney, thrombi, plaque, prostate, and lymph nodes that laid the foundation for modern quantitative ultrasound. After serving as Assistant Manager, Manager, and Associate Director of the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, he became its Research Director in 2005.(Based on document published on 9 August 2017).
