Dr. Karla Mercado-Shekhar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Engineering, and the Co-coordinator of the Centre for Biomedical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, Massachusetts, U.S.A., and her Masters and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Rochester, New York, U.S.A., as a Provost’s Fellow. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a recipient of a postdoctoral research grant from the U.S.A. National Institutes of Health. Dr. Mercado-Shekhar joined IIT Gandhinagar in 2019, and co-leads the Medical Ultrasound Engineering (MUSE) Lab, which focuses on developing and translating ultrasound techniques to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases. She serves in the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, the Biomedical Acoustics Technical Committee and Education in Acoustics Committee of the Acoustical Society of America, and the Advisory Editorial Board of the journal Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. She has been a member of the Young Professionals Committee of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S) since 2021.
