Recent media coverage has showcased work at Drexel University developing a prototype wound healing device using ultrasound. Low frequency, low intensity sound waves are sent with a transducer. The hypothesis is that ultrasound has an effect on the cellular membranes that helps stimulate cellular healing. Healing acceleration on the order of 6 weeks has been observed. By optimizing the prototype, it is hoped that the device can be made wearable for continuous treatment of chronic wounds. Funding has been obtained for further study.
