Student Events at IEEE IUS 2019
Several student events were organized during the 2019 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium in Glasgow, Scotland. These events offered students the opportunity to meet academic leaders in ultrasound, industry experts, and other students. A big thank you to everyone who participated – read on for more information about these events. This event was generously sponsored by OnScale, Inc., with a dinner buffet and drinks provided to all attendees. This event was designed primarily for PhD students nearing graduation and interested in pursuing an industry career. After opening remarks from Dr. Andrew Tweedie and introductions by each industry representative, students had a chance to meet and network with the industry members in a relaxed, casual setting. Students and professors got off to an early start at the Student-Professor Breakfast before the morning plenary session on Monday, October 7! This event, which took place in the SEC Armadillo, connected students interested in an academic research career with leading professors in different fields of ultrasonics around the world. Topics of discussion included postdoctoral positions, challenges of leading a research laboratory, and advice for pursuing academic research. A breakfast buffet was provided, courtesy of the IEEE IUS conference. Finally, the IEEE IUS Student Lunch took place on Tuesday, October 8. This event was open to all student delegates, and over 300 students were in attendance. After an overview of UFFC-S initiatives such as the Special Topic Schools in Ultrasonics and the UFFC-S Student Branch Chapters, an interactive activity was organized where students were encouraged to mingle with their future colleagues and collaborators by finding a student from a different institution that they had not previously met and exchanging introductions, research topics, conference experiences, and more. We hope everyone enjoyed these events at IEEE IUS 2019! Planning has already begun for new, exciting student events at IEEE IUS 2020 in Las Vegas. Stay tuned for more information!
