What do you get when a miniaturized pipe organ meets a micromachined ultrasonic transducer?

Strathclyde press release : A recent publication in IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control proposed designs to make miniaturised "pipe organs" using a 3D printer. These mini-structures,  designed based on the principles behind the musical instrument, can be coupled with narrow band acoustical elements like micromachined ultrasonic transducers. The benefit.... devices can emit a broader range of frequencies so that they are better adapted to provide high  quality medical images.
