Looking back at highlights from IUS 2022

It was an immense pleasure to exchange with colleagues at IEEE UFFC IUS 2022 in Venice! The final registration list tells us that there were 1112 on-site and 1072 online delegates (a total of 2184 attendees with roughly 49% students on-site and 44% students online) and 76 exhibitors or patrons from 52 countries at this first hybrid-format IUS. On average 31 people attended each of the 15 short courses. The 501 oral and 720 poster presentations selected from 1587 submitted abstracts were presented over the 3-day technical program with up to 9 parallel sessions. Scattered throughout the sessions were 20 invited talks and 3 clinical talks in a special session. The Young Professionals Panels I & II, Industry Mock Interviews, Industry Workshops, student events, awards, and WIE events added to the many dynamic interactions and events. For the first time, the professional photographs taken during the conference were shared with attendees. We hope that this provided some nice souvenirs and greater sharing with those who were unable to attend in person. The feedback that attendees were kind enough to offer is being analyzed to enhance future editions of the conference and short courses.
Sir John Pendry of Imperial College London presented a thought-provoking keynote during the opening session on Waves in time-dependent systems. The 150th Anniversary of the birth of Paul Langevin, the originator of modern ultrasound, was celebrated during the closing session with a presentation compiled by Francis Duck and Tom Szabo. The IUS 2022 challenge on Ultrasound Localization and Tracking Algorithms for Super Resolution attracted a large participation during the dedicated double session with lunch.
For those on-site, we hope you were able to enjoy meeting with colleagues during Tuesday’s reception mixer and that perhaps you were immortalized by either a caricaturist or by the paparazzi who invaded the front steps of the Palazzo del Cinema when they heard that many of the stars of ultrasound would be attending the evening’s festivities. The Gala dinner at the prestigious Excelsior Hotel was marked by a delicious meal and some rowdy waiters who burst into operatic song rather unexpectedly.
Profound thanks to the many members of the organizing committee and to our outstanding professional conference organizers (Conference Catalysts LLC and, locally, The Office). Also special thanks to the session chairs who had to take on the challenges of animating hybrid sessions and many thanks to the patrons and exhibitors who provided important interactions and support for IUS 2022. It is thanks to the collective and very high investment and hard work of everyone involved that the conference was a great success.
Venice presented itself in beauty with sunny and pleasant weather throughout the conference. We do hope that everyone who attended on-site was able to take some time to see the many facets of the city and that everyone, online or onsite, will retain memories of great scientific and technical exchanges at IUS 2022.
