The IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S) has been invited to participate with the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) for the ASE Hackathon.  A Hackathon is a design sprint-like event, used to bring people together to solve a problem or innovate a product or service.

The ASE has stated the problem: the use of cardiovascular ultrasound for anatomic and physiologic assessment at discrete points in time for critical care patients is well documented. However, such conventional and even advanced imaging evaluations can be difficult to obtain frequently or reliably in a rapidly changing clinical situation. Efforts to develop and apply continuous anatomic and physiologic ultrasound monitoring have been reported, but not widely adopted. Ongoing advancements in diagnostic ultrasound technology and a proliferation of advanced cardiopulmonary life support devices and other therapeutics in the critical care environment whose management could benefit from continuous cardiac anatomic and physiologic monitoring has stimulated the ASE’s interest in a Hackathon.

UFFC-S is looking for a total of ten UFFC-S members, five early-career or postdoc, and five experienced professionals, who will be divided into five Hackathon teams. Other Hackathon team members will consist of ASE experts in critical care and/or cardiac ultrasound imaging. Additionally, ASE is looking for one experienced UFFC-S professional to serve as a Hackathon judge.

The teams would initially meet virtually to brainstorm and then would attend a one-day, in-person Hackathon meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona on 18 February 2022. The one-day event would last from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM MST and teams would have a four-hour block of time to work together and then would be scheduled to give a presentation (of their plan to develop an ultrasound tool for critical care anatomic and physiologic monitoring) to a judging panel. All participants would come together and present their ideas during the judging session and a winner will be announced.

The Hackathon will be held during ASE’s State of the Art (SOTA) Echocardiography meeting and members of the Hackathon would be invited to participate in SOTA networking events.
