Purpose — The Symposium provides a forum for discussion of new directions in state-of-the-art technology and research opportunities in ultrasonic and photoacoustic imaging and characterization of tissues. The meeting affords physicians, engineers, and physical scientists a unique venue for sharing their contributions to this important area of technology development related to disease detection, diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, and treatment monitoring.

Topics — Presentations are solicited on 1) techniques for measuring ultrasonic properties of tissue, e.g., velocity, attenuation, scattering, and nonlinear effects; 2) ultrasonic imaging, photoacoustic imaging, and Doppler techniques, including transducer and array technology; 3) signal processing and pattern recognition; 4) ultrasound-guided intervention and robotic ultrasound imaging; and 5) ultrasonic and photoacoustic properties of tissue and their dependence on physical and biological variables. Presentations describing high-quality research involving clinical trials of new techniques and instrumentation or new clinical applications of existing technology are particularly welcome.

Meeting Venue — The Westin Arlington Gateway is the location for all meeting activities. The hotel is near the Washington Metro subway stop in Ballston, placing it within minutes of downtown Washington, Capitol Hill, and National Airport. Rapid and inexpensive access to Dulles Airport can now be achieved via the 15-minute Silver Line Express Bus to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station, followed by a short Metro ride to Ballston. Bus service to New York City is available nearby at the Rosslyn Metro stop. The New York City buses cost as little as $45 each way and feature free WiFi and electrical outlets.

The Westin Arlington Gateway is a four-star luxury hotel.  The meeting will take place in a beautiful, large ballroom, with spacious classroom seating for more than 100 attendees.  High ceilings and the absence of support pillars provide unrestricted views of the projector screen.

The Symposium has guaranteed a limited number of rooms at a special Symposium rate of $259 for a single or double room. The cut-off date for reserving a room at this rate is Tuesday, 10 May 2022. However, if you are planning to attend the meeting, we urge you to make your room reservation as soon as possible. You can make a reservation via  2022 Symposium Room Reservations. Alternatively, you can call the Central Reservations office at 703-717-6200 and request the rate for the Tissue Characterization Symposium conference.

Meeting dates and times — Symposium registration will open at 7:00 AM on Wednesday, 8 June. The technical sessions will be held from 8 June to 10  June, beginning at 8:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM on 8 and 9 June and at 12:00 PM on 10 June.

Program announcement — Detailed information on the program, as well as registration and logistical arrangements, will be emailed by 8 April

Interest in attending or submitting a paper — As soon as possible, please complete the form on our website: UITC Symposium.

Abstracts— Abstracts must be received by 11 March for technical review by the Program Committee. Prospective speakers will be informed during the week of 25 March regarding the acceptance of their abstracts for presentation. Accepted abstracts will be available on our website. No proceedings will be published.

Abstract format — For examples of the most recent abstract format, see Abstracts (2021) in UITC Symposium. The abstract body should be preceded by the title, authors’ names, abbreviated affiliations, and the email address of the corresponding author. The file should not exceed 300 words; references and equations should be used very sparingly; and figures and tables are not allowed. The name of the presenter must be underlined in the abstract. Please e-mail your abstract in Microsoft Word to (Click to show email)

One talk/speaker limit — A limit of one talk per speaker applies to all speakers, including invited speakers. No exceptions will be made. As stated above, please underline the name of the presenter in the list of authors accompanying the abstract. Abstracts will not be accepted unless the speaker is specified.

Casual dress code — We encourage all participants to bring only casual clothes. A casual dress will make all of us more comfortable and simplify our packing. So please help us make the Symposium an informal, relaxed, productive, and interactive experience in our luxury venue, the Westin Arlington Gateway.

Exhibits and corporate sponsorship — A limited amount of exhibit space for commercial scientific equipment is available just outside the meeting ballroom. Corporate sponsorship, which includes exhibit space, is also available. Contact Mel Linzer for more information on both options.
