2018 IEEE UFFC Society Awards
Annual IEEE UFFC Society awards, including the Achievement Award, Distinguished Service Award, Distinguished Lecturer Award and Outstanding Paper Award, were presented at the 2018 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium which was held in Kobe, Japan. The Awards Ceremony took place on October 24th, 2018 at the Portopia Hotel, followed by a concert and banquet.
IEEE UFFC Achievement Award
The IEEE UFFC Achievement Award is the highest Society-wide award presented to a member in special recognition of outstanding contributions. Selection criteria include significant technical publications in the field of ultrasonics, ferroelectrics, or frequency control, as well as contributions to these technical fields, and service to the Society.
The winner of the 2018 IEEE UFFC achievement award is Ronald Daigle, Verasonics
“for his significant contributions to software-based beamforming technology and his extraordinary endeavors in making a fully programmable ultrafast plane wave imaging system available to every ultrasound researcher around the world”. Laudation for Ronald Daigle was given by Jim Greenleaf, Mayo Clinic.

IEEE UFFC Distinguished Service Award
The IEEE UFFC Distinguished Service Award recognizes long-term support of the Society’s activities. Recognition is given to those who innovate new Society programs, administer major Committees, manage Society functions, or promote the Society’s areas of technical interest to the larger community.
The winner of the 2018 IEEE UFFC Distinguished Service Award is Steven Freear, University of Leeds, “In recognition of his masterful leadership as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control”. Laudation for Steven Freear was given by Piero Tortoli, University of Florence.

IEEE UFFC Outstanding Paper award
The IEEE UFFC Outstanding Paper award is given to authors of a paper published in the UFFC-S Transactions which exemplifies excellent technical contributions and is clearly written. The winner is selected on the basis of: originality, interest to the membership, contributions to the field, clarity of writing, and timeliness.
The winners of the 2018 IEEE UFFC Outstanding Paper award are Simon Bernard, Siavash Kazemirad, and Guy Cloutier. Their paper “A Frequency-Shift Method to Measure Shear-Wave Attenuation in Soft Tissues” was published in the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, Volume 64, No. 3, March 2017.

Distinguished Lecturer
The Distinguished Lecturer represents the UFFC Society by giving lecturers worldwide to the larger technical community. The subject of the lecture must be of current interest and the lecturer must be a prominent contributor in the field of the lecture. The speaker is selected for speaking style, prominence in the topic, and willingness to commit significant time and energy to preparation, travel and lectures.
Pai-Chi Li, National Taiwan University, is selected as a Distinguished Lecturer for the period January 2019 to June 2020. His lecture title is “Preclinical research with light and sound: shear wave imaging and photoacoustic imaging of 3D cell culture systems”.
New Fellows to IEEE
Six new Fellows to IEEE were also honored: David Howe, Kullervo Hynynen, Sergei Kalinin, Scott Smith, Shuji Tanaka and James Friend. Details and photos can be found in a news article from December 2017.
