John A. (Jack) Kusters

Jack Kusters passed away at home after a long battle with a debilitating illness.

Jack was born in Racine, WI in 1937, and grew up in Wisconsin and California. He served in the US Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He studied at Loyola University, Los Angeles and Stanford University.

Jack worked for over 35 years as an electrical engineer and principle scientist at Hewlett-Packard, Efratom, and Aglient, focusing on precision time and frequency. His work was instrumental to important technologies such as the atomic clock and GPS.

Jack focused on contributing to society. He was active in the IEEE: writing papers, chairing conferences, and reviewing papers. For several decades, he mentored youth in the Boy Scouts. He dedicated his later years to the Red Cross, teaching CPR and first aid to thousands.

Jack is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sheila Kusters of Cupertino; sons John and Robert both of San Jose, James of Santa Clara, and David of San Francisco; sisters Marilyn Ludwig of Jackson, CA and Kathleen Herrington of San Jose and grandchildren Victor, Renee, and Matthew.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph of Cupertino, 10110 North De Anza Boulevard, Cupertino, CA.

Donations to the Red Cross or the Boy Scouts of America, Santa Clara County are preferred.

Jack had made numerous significant contributions to the field of frequency control – in both quartz and atomic frequency standards, as well as in related areas. He was among the few who was an expert in both the theoretical and experimental aspects of frequency control.

He was an IEEE Fellow, and the winner of the 1985 IEEE Cady Award, “For his contributions to the development of SC-cut and other doubly rotated quartz resonators.”

He was also a winner of the 1987 IEEE Sawyer Award, “In recognition of outstanding contributions in engineering, technology development and management relating to quartz crystals and devices.”

When his long-time friend and coworker, Charles Adams, announced Jack’s death to some of Jack’s friends, on March 1, 2012, there was an outpouring of emails. Here are some excerpts:

“I’m so sad about Jack. You and Jack had an incredible influence on my life and career–I most surely wouldn’t have been so successful without your and Jack’s mentoring. I have many fond memories of our years together and often think about you both. You were great friends.”

“I am saddened to hear the news about Jack also. His dedication to the frequency control field provided me with inspiration technically and his contributions to the organizing and operation of the Symposium led by example for the rest of us.”

“So sad! He was a great guy; one who knew theory & experiment; quartz & atomic,…”

“Jack was one of the great influencers during my early career. It was always a pleasure to work with him. He will be sadly missed.”

“He was a great guy, and his many accomplishments are an ongoing gift to our profession.”

“One of the things I remember about Jack is that, in the 1980s, the then Frequency Control Awards Chair asked me to present the Cady Award to Jack. I noticed in his CV that he was a Senior Member of IEEE. So, I called him; “Jack, how come you’re not a Fellow?” He replied, “I guess, nobody has thought of nominating me.” (The next year, he was elected to be a Fellow.) Others are not so modest. Four people have called me in the past few months asking me to help them become a Fellow.”

“Jack was one of the great influences during my early career. It was always a pleasure to work with such a generous man. He will be sadly missed as a colleague and friend.”

“I, too, regarded Jack as just one of many really influential and inspiring members of our community I have been privileged to know and call friend. He was an important part of a dwindling generation of frequency control folks who made and continue to make tremendous contributions to our field.”

“This is sad news. Jack will be missed a great deal by all who knew him.”

“It is always sad when you lose a good friend of many years. Jack was a major contributor to the frequency control industry and will be missed.”
