Jean-Jacques Gagnepain

Jean-Jacques Gagnepain
Aug. 24, 1942-May 2, 2012

Jean-Jacques GAGNEPAIN was born in Montbeliard, France on August 24th 1942. He got his PhD from the University of Besançon in 1972. He was first teaching in Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Micotechniques (Besançon). He was a visiting scientist in N.B.S. Boulder (1975-1976), then he became head of a CNRS laboratory (Physics and metrology of oscillators 1978-1992). He authored numerous papers in Time and Frequency domain, piezoelectric waves, non linear phenomena, 1/f noise and so forth. A typical paper is certainly « Non linear effects in piezoelectric quartz crystals »(Physical Acoustics vol XI pp 245-288 Academic press 1975. His talents were recognized in particular by the 1995 W.G. CADY award, “For major contributions to our understanding of environmental and nonlinear effects, and pioneering results on 1/f noise in piezoelectric resonators.”

He founded « institut des Microtechniques » in Besançon together with an important CNRS group (500 people including 100 PhDs). He ended his career with very important positions in CNRS Paris (1991-2001), then in Ministry of Research and new Technologies (In particular he has been the first President of the « French National Agency for research »). He had a real vision of Science, Technology and Industry. His understanding of complex problems was incredibly fast and complete.

In August 2010, a sudden brains tumor was detected that took him to death on May 2nd 2012. During this long period of time he never complained nor made a single comment on his health. Thus showing incredible courage and dignity. Our community will deeply miss him and for long years. Our thoughts and condolences go to his wife Christiane, his children (Philippe and Anne) and grandchildren.
